Business bailouts are a patchwork effort

Responding to news that the Chancellor will make more money available for struggling businesses, Liberal Democrat Treasury spokesperson Christine Jardine said:

“This is a patchwork effort, yet another knee jerk reaction and it simply isn’t good enough.

“While the Chancellor has finally recognised that retailers need more support, as we have called for,  this is the least he could have done when what businesses now need a long term strategy to help them get through this and crippling crisis.

“And once again three million of our entrepreneurs and small businesses appear to continue  to be excluded from support.

“The Chancellor needs to extend furlough until the summer at the earliest and to include those who have been previously been behind.

“There is nothing about debt relief or business rates relief which could really help. The situation is now far more dire than when Mr Sunak extended the scheme to March and he needs to act now.”
