| The Liberal Democrats are putting the Tories on notice in their Blue Wall seats after making big gains in the former Conservative heartlands in the South of England. The Conservatives are haemorrhaging seats to the Liberal Democrats across the East of England, South East and South West, areas where the Tories have traditionally been strong. The results include the Liberal Democrats gaining control of St. Albans City and District Council and pushing Cambridgeshire County Council into No Overall Control. The Liberal Democrats have also made big gains in Wiltshire, Oxfordshire and Surrey as the electoral map continues to shift. Daisy Cooper MP, Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats, celebrated the gains: “The Tory Blue Wall has started crumbling in this election as the Liberal Democrats move forward in Tory former heartlands. “From Cheltenham to Cambridgeshire, Wiltshire to Woking, nowhere is safe for the Tories in their Blue Wall. With the true test for the government yet to come, Liberal Democrats have made advances in key Tory heartlands. There are vast swathes of the country where only the Liberal Democrats can beat the Tories. “The age of no-go areas for the Liberal Democrats in traditionally Tory southern cities towns and villages are over. Our party’s vision for a fairer, greener, and more caring country has proved popular across the South of England. Our local campaigns have taken the fight to the Conservatives’ appalling track record in local Government. Now the Liberal Democrats are becoming more trusted to deliver vital public services and protect our environment.” |
